Bredin Report: SMB Tech Purchase Priorities

PCs, laptops, and desktops are a top-priority SMB hardware purchase, according to our most recent Pulse survey of 500 U.S.-based SMB principals. Close to two-thirds of very small businesses (VSBs, with fewer than 20 employees), and more than four in five small businesses (SBs, with 20 to 99 employees) and midsized businesses (MBs, with 100 to 500 employees) plan to buy them at some point in the future. Printers and servers are also priority expenditures, particularly for larger SMBs.

Of the hardware categories surveyed, this year, all SMB size groups are most likely to buy PCs, laptops, and desktops, at 30% of VSBs, 45% of SBs, and 48% of MBs. In 2024, VSBs are equally likely to buy printers, and MBs are equally likely to buy printers and tablets.

When it comes to software, security is a priority for SMBs of all sizes. Two-thirds of VSBs and more than 90 percent of SBs and MBs currently use or plan to invest in a security application at some point.

This year, VSBs are most likely to invest in email marketing (15%), analytics (other than website analytics) (14%), and marketing automation (14%). SBs are prioritizing payroll/benefits administration, office productivity, and inventory management (all 29%). The top MB application investment plans this year are fleet management (37%), analytics (34%), and CRM/salesforce automation (32%).
