What keeps SMBs from hiring?

What are the biggest impediments to SMB hiring? To find out, we recently surveyed 500 U.S. and 100 U.K. SMB principals.

In the U.S., the top challenge is finding qualified candidates, regardless of company size. In the U.K., the biggest challenge is finding candidates who are a good fit with the company culture, which is second for U.S. SMBs. For U.S. small businesses (SBs, with 20 to 99 employees), offering competitive salaries and benefits is another significant hurdle. U.S. midsized businesses (MBs, with 100 to 500 employees), struggle to find good hiring resources/sites, and to negotiate compensation and benefits. SBs and MBs are significantly more challenged by most aspects of hiring than their smaller peers, largely because they do much more hiring.
