Bredin Report: SMB Application Spending: What’s About to Change

SMBs have big purchase plans for applications this year, and AI tops the list of categories they’ll spend on in 2023.

That’s the topline from Bredin’s March wave of the SMB Pulse survey of 500 U.S.-based principals. This research also reveals that SMBs currently use financial management, document management and videoconferencing applications the most.

SMB 2023 Application Usage

It’s interesting to note that even though SMBs with 100 to 500 employees (midsize businesses, or MBs) identify data security as their biggest challenge, only 67% of them have a data security solution.

For the rest of 2023, AI is a clear leader for planned purchase. AI tops the list for application purchase intent for both small businesses (SBs, 20-99 employees) and MBs. Very small businesses (VSBs, 1-19 employees) are most interested in acquiring a marketing/e-commerce app.
