Bredin Report: How SMBs are Using AI

AI tops the list of SMBs’ application purchase plans for 2023 – but their current adoption and usage of AI varies widely by size.

Those are some of the findings from Bredin’s most recent wave of the SMB Pulse survey of 500 U.S.-based principals. Specifically, we found that:

  • Very small businesses (VSBs, or companies with fewer than 20 employees) are most likely not to even be interested in using AI – 40% of them are in that category.
  • Small businesses (SBs, or companies with 20 to 99 employees) are most likely to be assessing AI – 28% of them are in the investigation stage.
  • Midsize businesses (MBs, or companies with 100 to 500 employees) are most likely to be using AI – 35% of them have already adopted it.

AI Usage by SMB Size

We wanted to understand how those SMB who are using AI are putting it to work. It varies quite a bit by company size:

  • VSBs and SBs are most likely to use AI for business intelligence and analytics – although VSBs cite several top uses, including marketing, workflow automation and virtual assistant.
  • MBs are most likely to use AI to improve data security.
